These animations use FWC-FWRI HAB Monitoring data (Karenia brevis abundance in cells/L) to show the spatial evolution of individual Karenia brevis sample concentrations in the region from Anna Maria Island to Marco Island (Lat 27.54-25.80).
Video controls:
- Full screen (top left corner) –– For detailed spatial inspection.
- Playback speed (lower right) — For slower rate of change.
The time-series plots beneath each video show the change in average cell concentrations for the entire region over the same time interval (shaded). The time series were derived from the FWC data by applying a cascaded low-pass filter (centered moving average) to suppress high-frequency sampling noise:

The filtered time series (100-day grid spacing) reveal a sequence of discrete bloom peaks and valleys, rather than continuous growth and decline over the course of a bloom. Wavelet analysis of the time series shows that these peaks have periods in the range of about 100–200 days:

This is consistent with the time-delay logistic equation, indicating that the dynamics of individual blooms are governed by the reproductive cycle of K. brevis.
